How Noise Damages Your Hearing
Hearing loss is one of the most common work-related illnesses and is always permanent – but it can easily be prevented. Noise damages hearing by harming the hair cells in the inner ear, leading to hearing impairment, tinnitus, and sound sensitivity. The damage develops gradually and is difficult to detect in time.
How Does Hearing Damage Occur?
Exposure to noise causes hearing cells to swell and stiffen. With prolonged overexposure, these cells die, leading to permanent damage. A useful analogy is that the noise you encounter throughout the day fills a glass of water – if it overflows, permanent damage occurs.
When Do You Need Hearing Protection?
According to EU Directive 2003/10/EC, hearing protection must be used when the average noise level reaches 85 dB and is recommended from 80 dB. A simple rule of thumb: if you need to raise your voice to be heard from one meter away, the noise level is likely harmful. Improper use of hearing protection, such as poor fit or removing it in noisy environments, significantly reduces its effectiveness.
Facts About Sound
Sound is measured in decibels (dB) and frequency (Hz). The decibel scale is logarithmic – an increase of 3 dB doubles the sound pressure. Human hearing is most sensitive in the 500–4000 Hz range, where speech occurs.
Using the right hearing protection and wearing it consistently in noisy environments is crucial to preventing lifelong hearing damage.
